Computer Use Policy
Computer Classroom and Lab Use Policy
The Library's Informatics Lab provides a central informatics facility for MUSC students, faculty and staff with a valid MUSC ID, who are engaged in computing for educational or academic purposes. The use of these computers is on a first-come, first-served basis with the exception that MUSC students who have a class assignment have priority. In addition to the computers available in the open lab area, there are four computer classrooms (two Macintosh, two Windows), that can be reserved by MUSC faculty for classes. MUSC students may reserve the computer classrooms to practice presentations that require a computer (e.g. PowerPoint) or for small group study that requires use of a computer and projector.
Classrooms may be reserved only for classes which require hands-on computer use by MUSC faculty, students or staff.
A faculty member or a designated proxy must be present in the classrooms for all class sessions, including exams.
Software availability must be confirmed with the operations manager (Robbie Weaver, ext. 2-2277) before classroom reservations will be confirmed.
Instructors must provide enough legally-licensed copies of any software that needs to be loaded in the informatics lab or classrooms. Users of the informatics lab and classrooms are to comply with the copyright laws and licensing restrictions. Software to be loaded in the informatics lab or classrooms should be accompanied by the license agreement.
Requests to teach software not already installed on the computers, or requests to have any files loaded on the computers, must be submitted and approved a minimum of two weeks in advance of the scheduled teaching date. This lead-time is needed to ensure enough time to load and test compatibility and functionality of programs and files before the scheduled class.
All software must be loaded under the direction of the Operations Manager. The Operations Manager will notify the instructor when the software has been loaded. It is the instructor's responsibility to test the software in the classroom to ensure that the software runs as the instructor intends.
Teaching reservations that involve software already installed should be submitted at least one week in advance.
Classes may be held in the informatics classrooms during the following hours:
- Monday - Thursday 8:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
- Friday 8:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
- Sunday 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
The informatics classrooms, including equipment, must be reserved in advance. Reservations are made on a first come, first serve basis. Reservation forms are available at the 4th Floor Service Desk, by calling 792-2381, or by using the Computer Classroom Reservation Form. Reservations will be confirmed in writing.
