Computers in the Library

The Labs
The Library has two computer labs, one on the second floor and one on the fourth floor. Each lab has Macintosh and Windows computers and printing capabilities (see Computer Printing and Photocopying). The smaller second floor lab is for MUSC student use. The larger fourth floor lab is open to MUSC students, staff and faculty during library staffed hours. Access to Library resources, the World Wide Web, and e-mail are available in both labs. The Labs offer:

Hardware Software
  • 2nd Floor: 8 computers
  • 3rd Floor: 8 computers
  • 4th Floor: 150+ computers
  • two-sided laser printers
  • color laser printer
  • scanners
  • Microsoft Office

Graphics Computers
2nd and 4th floor labs have Macintosh and Windows computers with attached scanners. These computers have particular graphic and/or multimedia software programs, including

There is a computer for access to the Biomolecular Computing Resources.

Other programs are also available on selected computers. The lab operations manager, LCTs, lab assistants, or staff at the service desks can help you locate software that is available on a limited number of computers.

Reminder: To keep our computers functioning properly, we ask that you not bring food or drinks into the lab.

Classrooms for Faculty
An important part of the Library's Informatics Lab is our computer classroom area on the fourth floor. There are five classrooms, all dual Macintosh / Windows, that MUSC faculty may reserve for their classes. Each classroom has a teaching workstation with a ceiling-mounted projector and between 24 and 28 student workstations. One smaller one has 12 workstations.

To reserve a classroom, fill out our Computer Classroom Reservation Form.

Classrooms for Students
Students may reserve classrooms in the evenings and on weekends to practice presentations. Each classroom is equipped with a teaching computer and a projector. Please note that curriculum classes take precedence: you may be "bumped" from the classroom if it is needed for a class, or if special preparation is required for early morning classes. However, these occurrences should be rare, since 5 classrooms are available.

To reserve a classroom, fill out our Computer Classroom Reservation Form.

The computers in these classrooms may be used when classes are not in session. Per students’ requests, one classroom, Room 436, is designated a quiet area. Check the sign on the door for availability.

Getting Help
For assistance using the computers or any of the computer applications, student lab assistants are available most hours. The lab operations manager and library staff at the 4th floor service desk are also available to assist you. For more information about using the computer lab, please see our Computer Use Policy, or call Robbie Weaver at 792-2277.
